Best Scanning Electron Microscope Images by graduate students recognized at awards ceremony
The Molecular and Nano Archaeology Laboratory (MNA) – a joint venture between the Department of Materials Science and The Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA, recently held its third annual Best SEM (scanning electron microscope) Image Award ceremony. The ceremony celebrated two years of operation of the lab’s SEM Nova Nano 230 (FEI). The lab has about 120 active users, most of whom are UCLA graduate students.
MNA Award
Presented by the co-directors of the MNA Lab. The first place winner received five hours of free operation time on the SEM (worth $250).
First: Chilan Ngo, Materials Science and Engineering, for “Nano Cream Cones”

- Sergey Prikhodko, one of the MNA lab’s co-directors, congratulates Ray Hsu on his second-place MNA Award.
Third: Jacob Stremfel, Materials Science and Engineering, for “Bescherballs”

- Bescherballs - Jacob Stremfel, Materials Science and Engineering

- Jacob Stremfel explains his “Beshcherball” image is cheekily named after his advisor Eric Besher, adjunct professor of materials science and engineering. The image is of an ash particle surrounded by crystals, discovered in a rapid-setting cement hydrating paste.
FEI Tony Award
Presented by Tony Carpenter, U.S. Sales Manager for FEI Company, which manufactured the lab’s SEM. The first place winner received a carry-on bag, embroidered with the FEI logo.
