Watch the 2012 Commencement and Student Speakers
The UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science held its 2012 commencement on June 16 at Drake Stadium. More than 1,000 students, including 626 candidates for a bachelor’s degree, attended the ceremony. And nearly 8,500 parents, family members, and friends were in the stadium stands.
Wanda M. Austin, President and CEO of The Aerospace Corporation, delivered the keynote remarks. Austin’s remarks touched on three key areas she encouraged the graduates to consider as they move through their careers: opportunities to change the world; to advocate for STEM Education; and an obligation to be ethical role models. Austin was introduced by Dean Vijay K. Dhir.
Melissa Erickson, a bachelor’s of science degree recipient in electrical engineering, represented all graduates at the 2012 commencement as the student speaker. Erickson reflected on the unique experiences of UCLA engineering students, and how those experiences have helped shape and prepare them for their next steps. Erickson, was introduced by mechanical and aerospace engineering professor Jeff Eldredge, the faculty marshal for the ceremony.
